1. What are cookies
#Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website. They are widely used to make websites work more efficiently and to provide information to the site owners.
This Cookie Policy explains what cookies we use on the 47th Joint Operations Unit website ("the Site"), why we use them, and how you can manage your preferences.
2. Cookies we use
#Essential cookies
These cookies are strictly necessary for the Site to function. They enable core features such as access to secure areas and session management. The Site cannot function properly without these cookies. No consent is required for strictly necessary cookies under UK GDPR and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR).
| Cookie | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| __Secure-better-auth.session_token | Maintains your authenticated admin session. Only set when you log in via Discord OAuth. | 7 days |
| __Secure-better-auth.state | Holds the OAuth state parameter during the Discord sign-in handshake to prevent CSRF. | 5 minutes |
| __cf_bm, cf_clearance | Security cookies Cloudflare, our content delivery and attack protection service, may set when it checks that traffic is not automated. None are set on a normal visit today. | Short-lived, set by Cloudflare |
Local storage
The Site uses browser local storage (not cookies) to remember your preferences. Local storage data stays on your device and is never sent to our servers.
| Key | Purpose | Cleared |
|---|---|---|
| jou-new-look-banner-dismissed-v1 | Remembers that you closed the "new look" notice so we don't show it again. The notice stops showing after 7 November 2026 either way. | When you clear site data |
| jou-join-nudge-dismissed-v1 | Remembers that you closed the "Still here?" Discord invite card, or used its Join button, so we don't show it again. | When you clear site data |
Note: Beyond essential session cookies, the Site does not use analytics, advertising, cross-site tracking, or third-party marketing cookies. Web fonts are loaded via Next.js's next/font pipeline (self-hosted at build time). Images hosted on Discord and YouTube video thumbnails are fetched directly by your browser from cdn.discordapp.com and img.youtube.com; those CDNs may set their own cookies under their own privacy policies.
3. Managing your cookie preferences
#Most web browsers allow you to control cookies through their settings. You can set your browser to refuse cookies or delete certain cookies. The following links provide guidance for popular browsers:
- Google Chrome - Settings > Privacy and Security > Cookies
- Mozilla Firefox - Settings > Privacy & Security > Cookies
- Microsoft Edge - Settings > Cookies and Site Permissions
- Safari - Preferences > Privacy > Manage Website Data
Please note that disabling essential cookies may affect the functionality of the Site.
4. Third-party embeds
#The Site embeds content from third parties that may set their own cookies once loaded. We do not control these cookies; review the providers' own policies for detail.
- Twitch is not embedded. The Live now section on the Operations page asks our server whether member streams are live, and our server checks with Twitch, so no Twitch cookies are set in your browser. Live streams link out to
twitch.tv. - YouTube video thumbnails (
img.youtube.com) and theyoutube-nocookie.complayer embedded in some op reports. - Discord images that an op report links to, served from
cdn.discordapp.com.
5. Why there is no cookie banner
#The Site does not show a consent banner because it only sets strictly necessary cookies (session and OAuth state). Under UK GDPR and PECR this category is exempt from prior consent. If we ever add advertising cookies, cross-site trackers, or any cookie that requires consent, a banner will appear here first. Cloudflare's security cookies, when it sets them, are strictly necessary in the same way.
The Site also uses a small amount of functional browser storage (localStorage), for example to remember that you closed the "new look" notice. This data never leaves your browser, contains no identifiers, and is exempt from consent requirements in the same way.
6. Changes to this policy
#We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time to reflect changes in technology, legislation, or our operations. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date. We encourage you to check this page periodically.
7. Contact
#If you have questions about our use of cookies, please reach out to the 47th JOU leadership team through our Discord server. You can also email [email protected].
